Is Three Times the Charm for Halle Berry?

We love Halle at The Bridal BFF so it's only appropriate to report that her engagement to Olivier Martinez has been confirmed! Rumors were circulating last week that she was engaged although both Berry and Martinez and their reps have been quiet, but leave it to the good ol' papparazi to spot Halle out on New Year's Day rocking an emerald and diamond ring.

Halle and Olivier met while on the set of "Dark Tide," a movie she was filming wth him in South Aftrica. Both have been dating for a little over a year. Halle Berry, 45, has been married twice before to former baseball star David Justice and R&B soul singer Eric Benet. Halle also has a 3-year-old daughter with her ex-French Canadian hottie Gabriel Aubry. Martinez, 46, has been romantically linked to singer Kyle Minogue and actress Mina Sorvino....word around the blogosphere is that he looooooves the ladies. Let's just hope he is ready to settle down because we really don't want to hear about Halle going through another failed relationship. He sure is fine though! ;-)

After Ring Shopping...What's Next?

Inquiring minds (AKA The Bridal BFF) want to know: How long does it take to get the ring after you've gone shopping for the ring? A week? A month? A year? I tried to Google this topic, but was surprised to discover that there's not much information out there to help me out. And, yes, you read it right. To help 'ME' out. My boyfriend surprised me last Friday with a trip to the jewelers to look at rings. YAY! The experience of picking out and trying on rings with the man of your dreams is quite surreal. And although it's been less than a week, I can't help but think about what's next. Naturally I'm dying to know when the proposal will happen. What should I do in the meanwhile? Thank goodness for this wedding blog. It will be my therapy until the future Mr. Bridal BFF decides to pop the big question. ;-)

Changing Your Name After The 'I Dos'

Guess who's back? It's September. The Bridal BFF is back up in heeeeeeere. Let's go.

I hope everyone survived the summer wedding season. It was quite a busy one. Congrats to all of the bridal besties who tied the knot, exchanged vows, jumped the broom, said 'I Do' and allllll that good stuff. The Bridal BFF wishes you a lifetime of happiness. And now that you're married I know you are probably bogged down with your post-wedding 'to do' list. And one of the tasks for most newly married women is the decision to keep or change your name. I'm all for taking your husband's name after you are married. Being married means sharing your life with that person so why not share your name too. The decision to change your name requires some legwork on your part. See below for a few pointers on how to make that happen. Ready, set, GO!

1. You will not be able to legally change your name until AFTER the wedding ceremony and AFTER you've received an authentic marriage certificate. Make sure you have that in hand. It is proof that you and your boo said 'I Do'.

2. Contact the Social Security Administration at 1-800-772-1213. You will need a new social security card and this hotline will assist you with step-by-step instructions on how to change your name. Don't worry, they will mail you a new card with your new name and it will be FREE. ;-)

3. Your next stop will be the DMV. Be sure to check with your local DMV on what identification you will need to bring with you to obtain a new ID with your married name. Pack a lunch and bring a book the day you do this because DMV = a loooooong wait!

4. Once you are all set with the SSA and the DMV, you can notify your banks, credit card companies, local post office, employer, schools, utility companies, landlord, doctors, professional organizations, family, friends, and of course Facebook and Twitter. Haha!

Happy Monday bridal besties. I hope everyone is out there enjoying this delicious summer we're having.

Today I want to kick off the week with the one and only Beyonce and her latest video for the song "Best Thing I Never Had". When I first heard this song on the radio a few weeks ago I was into it, but after watching the video, I AM ABSOLUTELY LOVING IT. In typical Bey fashion we get another lesson on how to tell off that no-good man from the past. Bey has already taught us that he's 'Irreplacable', and if 'He Likes It Then He Should Put A Ring On it'...and now, we learn that he truly did turn out to be 'The Best Thing I Never Had'! BRAVO BEY! Thanks for the reminder.

Oh, and thanks for showing us how to rock a hot wedding gown by Baracci Beverly Hills and a sexy lace teddy (I'm so jealous) by Agent Provocateur. The dress she wore in the scenes while at the reception is Vera Wang. I sooooo want to look like that on my wedding day!

Why A Day of Coordinator is Important

As a bridal consultant, I specialize and offer services in the area of day of wedding coordination. I can't stress how important it is to consider hiring a day of coordinator (DOC) for your wedding. In my opinion, it's not even a question of 'IF' your budget permits. All couples SHOULD build this expense into their wedding budget. When working with my clients I always say, 'You're only job on your wedding day is to be the bride!' I hear of so many horror stories of couples who decide to go sans a wedding planner and handle the logistics on their own. No bueno. It's also not good to elect a family member or friend to be your coordinator because chances are they want to enjoy the day like you and not be bogged down with responsibility. The DOC is hired to make sure you have a stress-free wedding. A huge part of this task involves being able to effectively communicate and manage the host of vendors that the couple has hired. The wedding coordinator is your eyes and ears on the day of your wedding and you should feel confident in knowing that your coordinator will go to bat for you. She/he is a great investment. Hire one today!

If you're still unsure as to whether or not you need the assistance of a day of wedding coordinator then just take a look at a real-life example of a list of tasks I performed for a wedding I recently coordinated:

One Month Before Wedding

- Provided an initial phone consultation and an in-person meeting with the couple
- Accompanied the couple to a venue site visit with their caterer
- Provided unlimited access for couple to reach me via email/phone
- Created a wedding day timeline
- Contacted all wedding vendors prior to wedding day

Ceremony

- Attended the rehearsal at the couples request
- Pinned boutonnieres on groomsmen and the groom
- Gave a bridesmaid some Q-tips to help her adjust her make-up
- Handed out corsages and bouquets to bridal party
- Gathered family and priest for ketubah signing
- Held the rings for the groom and passed them off to the best man before the ceremony
- Assisted the pianist with directions to the church to ensure his prompt arrival
- Walked bride to church
- Handed a tissue to bride before she walked down the aisle

Reception Preparation

- Assisted with decorating the reception hall
- Worked with the caterer, baker, DJ, banquet manager and photographer on venue logistics/setup
- Arranged tablescapes and placed menus
- Helped with all last minute adjustments such as creating a box to hold cards and figuring out logistics for lights that were being used as part of the reception decor

Reception

- Lined up the bridal party for the introductions and announced the bridal party at the reception
- Emceed the reception
- Communicated the timeline with all vendors during the reception
- Worked with the banquet manager to adjust lighting and air conditioning
- Facilitated the open bar request made by the brother of the bride
- Had a chair ready for the bride to sit on during the garter removal
- Carried wedding gifts to the couples' car
- Cleaned up reception hall and did a final sweep of the space to make sure all personal belongings were gone

I know...it's alot. But imagine handling this list all by yourself...on YOUR wedding day! Not such a great idea. I secretly and privately...privately and secretly DREAM of a tropical destination wedding in Jamaica. The island of Jamaica is rich in culture and a very romantic spot to say 'I Do'. Today I'm living vicariously through my favorite wedding photog, Mr. Elton Anderson, and the amazingly beautiful wedding of Ayesha and Chinedu. Their wedding was super fly. I absolutely adore the color scheme of bright yellows and black that they chose for the decor. The chair covers, escort cards and centerpieces were done well. The backdrop of the ceremony site was breathtaking. Everything about this wedding made me all tingly inside! Elton did a fabulous job. I really....really....really want him to photograph my wedding! The Case of the Rehearsal Dinner Dilemma

Q: Our budget is extremely tight for the wedding and we are in need of suggestions on how to pull off a great (and affordable) rehearsal dinner for our attendants. Our apartment is too small to host it so what can we do?

A: There are many ways to have an affordable rehearsal dinner. Keep in mind that it is the final opportunity for your wedding party and closest family members to be together before you walk down the aisle so it should be a fun and stress-free event. It can also be very casual. One of my clients, for instance, is having a very low-key picnic with pizza for her rehearsal dinner! She didn't want it to cost too much but she also wanted it to be intimate and the idea of a picnic near her wedding venue the night before is a fabulous idea. Also, if your budget doesn't have much wiggle room you don't have to necessarily feed people a full dinner. Consider serving light appetizers or just offering a few desserts! If you let people know up front what to expect then they won't really care if you're feeding them or not.

Questions for Your Wedding Venue

Choosing your wedding venue is one of the single most important decisions that you will make during the wedding planning process. It's sometimes easy to fall in love with a location based on its' outer beauty, BUT before you sign any contracts, make sure that the venue is both beautiful and practical. Your venue will set the tone for your entire wedding. When you are out scouting locations, be sure to keep these key questions in mind:

Will there be a banquet/event manager available to me on my wedding day?

Most hotels and banquet halls have an event manager on their staff. They know the space and will be helpful to you on your wedding day in the event that something goes wrong. Be sure to confirm his/her attendance for your wedding day before signing a contract.

Can I bring in my own vendors?

Always check to make sure that the venue doesn't have limitations on bringing in outside vendors. Some venues prefer that you work with their 'own' vendors. In my eyes, EVERYTHING is negotiable, but depending on the venue there may be a fee that you are required to pay to the house caterer/florist for opting out of using their services.

Can I light candles?

It seems like a basic question but be sure to ask as some venues do not allow open flames. For instance, a museum will definitely be against any sort of candle or open flame due to valuable art that may be on display in the space you are considering. Here's a Bridal BFF wedding planning tip for you: A great alternative to a candle requiring a flame is using a battery-operated candle. Same effect as a real candle without the concern of a fire hazard!

Is there a corkage fee if I bring my own wine?

Although some venues may allow for you to bring your own alcohol, make sure you check on whether or not they charge a corkage fee. Corkage fees vary from state to state, but on average they range between $8 - $20 a bottle. Bringing in your own liquor will definitely save you $$$ as venues often sell their alcohol at a triple markup!

Are there any other weddings/events booked in the space on the same day as my wedding?

This is a very important question! Make sure that the venue is not overtaxed on your day and that their staff are able to devote full attention to your wedding. You are paying for a service and you want to make sure that you get what you pay for.

How early can I arrive to decorate/set up?

Most reception halls will generally allow you to arrive earlier to set up decorations. On the flip side of the coin, make sure it is clearly communicated what time your contract ends and if there are charges associated with staying over the contracted time.

Does the venue have a backup plan in the event of inclement weather?

Having your wedding at a venue with a picturesque outdoor space is fabulous (veranda, near the water, rooftop deck, etc...), but make sure the space can accomodate a backup plan in case of bad weather.

Alphabetically Speaking: Escort Cards at Your Wedding

As a wedding planner it is my priority to pay attention to ALL of the little details that a couple may overlook when planning a wedding. One important bit of advice that I can offer my bridal besties that are planning a wedding is to alphabetize your escort cards!

At my last wedding, the bride handed me her escort cards an hour before the wedding and asked me to place them on the escort card table in alphabetical order. Needless to say, the cards were unorganized, and although I didn't mind assisting with this task, it took away from me focusing on other 'day of' duties. Taking the time to alphabetize your escort cards prior to your wedding day will help make things run smoothly on your wedding day. It will also help your other vendors (especially your caterer and waitstaff) stay more organized. Not to mention, your wedding planner will absolutely love you for doing this in advance! ;-)

Here are some other things to keep in mind about escort cards:

Don't confuse escort cards with place cards. Both are similar but different. Escort cards direct a guest to the table they are assigned. Typically escort cards will be set up at a table or a unique display at the reception. Place cards are at each table and indicate where each guest is seated.

Alphabetize your escort cards by the first letter of the guests' LAST NAME and then by FIRST NAME. Depending on the number of guests, you may need to spread your cards out on a big table and group by each letter and then alphabetize. For instance, put all the 'A' last names together, the 'B' last names together...and so on.

If you have children attending your reception, they should have their own escort card. Kids will LOVE this. It will make them feel important. ;-)

Try to get the names of ALL of your wedding guests. However, if you're unsure of which girlfriend your cousin is bringing to your wedding then it is okay to put '& Guest' on the escort card. ;-)

Is Eloping for You?

The topic of eloping came up in a conversation I had over brunch this weekend. It got me thinking about who's actually out there eloping and why you should or shouldn't consider it.

The word elope means to run away and not return to the point of origination. The act of eloping (elopement) is commonly used in the world of weddings to describe a quick and secretive marriage ceremony. Most couples who elope do it to save money. A traditional wedding will cost alot more than just hopping on a flight and jetting off to Vegas to say 'I Do'. Another big reason why couples opt to elope is because their parents or loved ones may object. The stress of wedding planning and dealing with family personalities becomes a non-factor when couples decide to elope. Just keep in mind that when your parents find out that you eloped behind their backs, they may really be pissed off! Eeek. And friends may be hurt that you didn't tell them or include them in on the celebration.

So, if you think that eloping is for you, here are a few suggestions on how to make it work:

Consider hosting a group dinner or small celebration after your elopement as a way to include your family and friends.
If it's a local elopement, be sure to check your state marriage laws. In the state of Massachusetts, couples are required to obtain a marriage licence which involves getting a blood test, presenting a valid picture ID and paying a fee.
Hire a wedding photographer to take pictures during your elopement and share them with your family and friends via an online photo album or with wedding announcements. This is a great way to allow your loved ones to share the memories.

I personally think the idea of eloping is kind of romantic. The idea of whisking off to City Hall in a modest wedding dress and sharing that moment with that special person seems like it would be quite blissful. What are your thoughts? Is eloping for you?

Ok. So I didn't make it to NYC Bridal Market this past weekend (I vow to be there next year), but I did hear that the 2012 Amsale collection was all that and a bag of chips! As you know, Amsale is The Bridal BFF's absolutely FAVORITE wedding dress designer. Her looks for 2012 are simply gorgeous. You will find lots of texture as only Amsale can do. Her gowns are both fashion forward and timeless and I loved how she used a wide range of beautiful organza, taffeta, silk and beading in the 2012 collection. Amsale can do NO wrong in my book. This I Know: Thoughts on My Own Wedding Day

Like most wedding planners who are not married, I often think about what my own wedding day would be like. I once believed that I was destined to be the wedding planner who never weds, but lately I'm starting to feel hopeful. Although the exact details are not planned down to a science, there are a few things that I am sure I want on my wedding day...

My 'man' and his groomsmen will rock Converse. No ifs, ands or BUTS about it. I think it's a fly wedding trend and the cool and relaxed style of Converse sneakers is the exact tone that I want my wedding day to represent. I LOVE Chucks. In fact, I'm wearing a pair right now. ;-)

I, on the other hand, will most definitely be wearing an Amsale gown. She is the dopest wedding gown designer out there. And the fact that she is a woman of color is an added bonus! ;-)

My wedding will be outdoors near the water. Preferably beachside. I love the calm and romantic spirit of the water. I know that when I finally say 'I Do' I want to have the backdrop of the ocean right there in plain view.

Huge bridal parties are a major NO NO in my book so I only plan to have three of my closest friends by my side on my wedding day. These will be the women I want to share this special day with and the same women that I plan to grow old with.

And last but never least....

More than all the material things that go into making a wedding happen, I want to feel this feeling EACH and EVERY day that I spend with my future husband. The thoughts of Converse and Amsale gowns would not be possible if I didn't believe in the undeniable emotion of LOVE that brings two people together. Simply put, I want my wedding day to be a true celebration of LOVE.

Black Love - World Record Style

I've been in a positively positive mood lately and to keep with that theme I searched the blogosphere for a feel-good story to share with my bridal besties. It didn't take me long to come across Herbert and Zelmyra Fisher. Perhaps you've heard of them. They currently hold the Guinness World Record for the LONGEST marriage of a living couple for their astounding 85 YEARS OF MARRIAGE. He's 104. She is 101. Imagine that!

The Fishers are a true testament of LOVE and what it means to preach and practice the vows, 'til death do us part'. It's stories like this that make me feel all giddy inside. It is a blessing to find your soulmate. It is even more of a blessing to be able to spend 85 years of your life with the person that God put on this earth just for you.

Here's to the Fishers! Truly an inspiration. ;-)

2011 Running of The Brides

It's that time of year again bridal besties!

Brides-to-be from in and around the Boston area will be gathered at the entrance of The Hynes Convention Center THIS Friday during the wee hours of the morning waiting for their chance to score a wedding gown of their dreams (at a deeply discounted price, of course). Will you be there?

The bi-annual Filene's Basemnt Running of The Brides event is happening on Friday, March 11th, 2011 at The Hynes Convention Center. The event is from 8 AM - 8 PM. Many brides-to-be arrive as early as 5 AM to beat the crowds and increase their chances of finding an amazing gown at a great price. Gowns start as low as $249. For those of you who don't know, The Bridal BFF isn't just a fabulous blog, it's an awesome boutique wedding planning business located here in Boston, MA. This weekend I will be working to get my February couple down the aisle. The last two weeks have been busy, but good busy. Actually GREAT busy. Often times people ask me what I love about wedding planning. My passion for love is so strong that I want to build a successful business around it. Of course it's alot of work, but I love every second of it! What more can a girl ask for? Well, aside from a closet full of fabulous shoes and a bottomless bank account?!

The Case of the Wedding Know-It-All

Q: My family members are driving me nuts! My aunt insists on calling me EVERY day with random things I should be doing to plan for the wedding. My cousin won't stop emailing me dress suggestions and nagging me about what color scheme I'm going to choose. And we won't even get into how my future mother-in-law is acting....HELP! How do I deal with all of these sudden wedding know-it-alls?

A: When you get engaged it is a joyous time. You will notice that some of your family members may want to kick right into wedding planning mode which can be a bit overwhelming. Everyone will suddenly become an 'expert' and want to live vicariously through your journey to the altar. As a wedding planner, my advice is simple. If your budget allows, HIRE a professional wedding planner to step in and help you. Planning a wedding can be stressful in many ways and it may be best to work with a neutral person who you won't easily offend. Wedding planners know the nature of planning and they are able to assist in a variety of different ways.

During this time, you may also notice that family members will become over-eager to help you with certain responsibilities on your wedding day BUT when that day arrives, they would much rather be a part of the day than your volunteer help. As a way to still keep your family members involved without allowing them to drive you insane, you can delegate small projects to them such as researching restuarants for an engagement party (for example) and leave the bigger duties to a wedding planner. Weddings are a very emotional event and your family will want to make sure they are a part of it in some way. Be the model bridal bestie and do the best you can to keep the peace and keep your stress level down!

One of my absolute favorite aspects of wedding planning is working with the photographer. Talented photographers are able to tell an amazingly vivid and beautiful love story that will allow your family and friends to feel connected to you on your wedding day. Today, I want to share the work of CreativeSoul Photography, based in Atlanta, GA. I came across their blog last night and fell in love with this video in which they turned still photo frames into a short film. I really felt like I was at this wedding! Ah-mazing.

Urban Outfitters Launches BHLDN Bridal Collection

Are you a fashion forward 'bridal bestie' seeking the opposite of traditional on your wedding day? Urban Outfitters may be the place to go as they announced this week that their bridal collection, BHLDN, is set to launch just in time for Valentine's Day. Expect a refreshingly trendy collection full of unique personality and quirkiness as BHLDN makes its mark on the industry of bridal fashion.

BHLDN will launch as an e-commerce site first, with the expectation to expand into retail locations in select cities at a later date. Fenway Park
I'm kicking off my list with a true Boston staple, Fenway Park. If your boo is a Boston sports fan, what better place to propose than this legendary ballpark. This engagement story could also play out in the entire theme of your nuptials. I can see it now...a wedding by the 'Green Monster', Boston Red Sox style!

Charles River
My aunt was recently married and she chose to have her wedding pictures taken by the picturesque Charles River. I know many local couples that have been by the river at some point during their courtship. Whether it's to take a leisurely stroll or to picnic in front of the Esplanade, it is a true lovers playground. The Charles River could serve as an uber-romantic spot to pop the question.

Carson Beach
Memories of Summer 2010 come to mind when I think of Carson Beach. On a warm summer night the pier is quite magical. A romantic spot indeed. Le sigh. Even now with the snow on the ground I'm sure you could create unforgettable memories at this popular South Boston spot. It holds a special place in my heart and I guarantee it will be an amazing spot to create memories of your own.

Of course the Boston Common would make any list that has anything to do with Boston! As the oldest park in the country, the Boston Common is a treasure. From the world famous swan boats to the frog pond, you will find romantic inspiration everywhere.

The North End
If you're considering popping the question at a romantic restaurant over a fabulous meal then The North End is the place to go, Lucca, Bricco, Prezza, Tresca, Strega, Bacco, Artu, Pomodoro, Limonicello, Dolce Vita, Dom's, Giacomo's, Mike's Pastry...the never-ending list of Italian eateries in this section of Boston goes on and on. Take your pick!

My final pick is the gorgeous backdrop of The Boston Harbor. More fun memories of Summer of 2010 for me. Double le sigh. Take your sweetie for a long stroll along the harborside or treat that special person in your life to a relaxing cruise aboard the Spirit of Boston. Both are perfect options to set the scene for an over-the-top romantic proposal.

Paper Crush: The Wedding Program

I always knew that I wanted to be involved in the wedding planning industry in some form or fashion. Prior to becoming a wedding planner, I dreamed of starting my own invitation design business (hmmm, perhaps it's something I should reconsider). With that being said, I love paper! In fact, I've been known to spend hours in Papyrus, admiring all the yummy cards and stationery. Paper plays a huge part in the wedding planning process. My favorite stationery item that is often times overlooked and completely cut out of the wedding planning budget are wedding programs.

The wedding program plays an important role on your big day as it provides your guests with a visual guide to understand the flow of your ceremony. It is a great way to get your guests involved. I could say alot of things about the news of Jesse James and Kat Von D's engagement, but I'll just fall back and let this typical Hollywood tale play out. Is the ink on his divorce papers to Sandra Bullock even dry yet? Geesh.

Celebrities are notorious for falling in and out of love so fast. It raises a good topic. What is an acceptable time frame after a divorce to get involved in a serious relationship? Jesse James was divorced from Sandra Bullock in June. He went public about his relationship with Kat Von D in August. He is now engaged in January. Did you do the math? Unreal.

Perhaps it is easy being green...

This years' Golden Globes fashion had everyone 'green' with envy. Although many of the fabulous gowns we saw on Sunday night came in predictable tones of pale and pink, I noticed many celebs stepping outside the lines to create bold statements in glam shades of green. So, it's no surprise that wedding industry experts and bridal besties around the world tuned in to this magical evening in Hollywood for some yummy wedding inspiration. Check out Catherine Zeta-Jones in the above pic. She is wearing a hot emerald green gown designed by wedding industry's own Monique Lhuillier. Many of the green gowns that hit the red carpet this year would even be great options for the MOTB (mother of the bride) since green is traditionally looked at as a more mature, sophisticated color.

You're Invited: My Auntie Nicky Ties The Knot!

Ever wonder what wedding planners do to ring in the new year? We attend weddings, of course! On January 1, 2011 (1.1.11 at 1 pm, to be exact) I attended the wedding of my beautiful aunt Janique Campbell and her longtime boyfriend Robert Lynch. My auntie Nicky is like the craziest, sexiest, coolest aunt to me! Many of my fondest childhood memories include her and that is why it was so amazing to share in her happiness on this big day.

Robert and Nicky's wedding ceremony was held at St. Patrick's Parish in Roxbury, MA and the reception took place at the Boston Marriott Quincy in Quincy, MA. The couple choose the location of one of their first dates, The Charles River, as a backdrop for pictures with the bridal party. The reception was a wonderful celebration of love among family and close friends. Nicky and Robert shared a poignant video/picture slide show during dinner and we danced to an awesome medley of 80s, 90s, and new school R&B and hip hop. A separate room was set up for guests to leave video recorded well wishes to the happy couple. All in all, it was an exceptional wedding. See for yourself...

Happy Monday. I'm kicking the week off with another musical moment coming straight from The Bridal BFF's ultimate wedding playlist. I draw inspiration from so many different genres of music, but I have a soft spot when it comes to old school R&B. Today I wanted to share one of my favorite songs from Pebbles and Babyface. The Broke Bridesmaid

Q: I've selected my bridal party and I'm very excited. However, one of my bridesmaids is feeling a little overwhelmed with the costs associated with this coveted responsibility. I didn't budget the expense of paying for any of my bridesmaids, so what should I do about the 'broke bridesmaid'?

A: This is a fairly common dilemma, especially during this economy. As the bride-to-be, it is important to set the proper expectations up front (especially financial commitments) when it comes to your bridal party. Let them know all of the potential expenses that they will be responsible for as well as an estimated budget. Bridesmaids play an integral role in the wedding planning process. Not only are they responsible for their dresses, but often times the bridal party chips in for the bachelorette party, bridal shower and certain travel expenses that may be associated with the two. Keeping the financial pep talk realistic will help you weed out anyone who simply cannot commit. Offer no hard feelings if money is the reason one of your friends decides to back out. A great alternative would be to allow them to recite a reading during the ceremony or give them another responsibility that will include them as part of your special day. Keep in mind that this 'broke bridesmaid' is still a friend and your understanding around this issue is more important than anything!

Does Ring Size Matter?

The mood is set. You and your guy are at your favorite spot. Everything is perfect. He gets down on one knee. You're in complete and utter shock. Those infamous words, "Will you marry me?" flow from his lips and you stare down at the dainty ring box as he reveals to you the ring that he has chosen to symbolize the love you both share. Ok, soooooo maybe it's not the 'royal wedding Prince William & Kate Middleton blinged out 14-carat diamond encrusted sapphire' ring that you were secretly hoping for. Doesn't he get cool points for trying???? Does ring size really matter?

The topic of ring size has been hot this week. Online sources such as NecoleBitchie.com and Essence.com have been weighing in on the topic. Well, now it's my turn. I decided to open up the discussion to my faithful followers on Twitter and Facebook. It ignited a great debate around what an engagement ring should symbolize. It was refreshing to see that the majority of women out there aren't tripping over the size of a ring (Fellas, I've helped alleviate the stress slightly...THANK ME LATER!). Media leads us to believe that the bigger the rock, the better. I beg to differ. I've seen enough episodes of fooleywang shows such as Basketball Wives and Real Housewives to know that a big ring DOES NOT gaurantee happiness. Nor should it be a measure of how much your guy cares about you. Enough said.

The Art of Being 'The Perfect Guest'

We have entered the time of year when event upon event will be filling up our already busy calendars. Holiday parties, cocktail dinners, weddings, engagement parties, birthday parties, baby showers....the list goes on. So, how do you manage your social calendar and make sure that you continue the reputation you've built as being the 'perfect guest'? Here are a few pointers from The Bridal BFF...

RSVP! - Being the perfect guest begins at the moment you receive an invitation. Most invitations will ask the you RSVP by a certain date. RSVP is french for 'please respond'. It is not french for 'take your time and get back to us when you feel like it'. So, make it a priority to respond quickly. Even if you don't plan on attending, let the host(s) know. Your response could hold up a variety of key elements such as dinner reservations or headcount for party favors. So RSVP!

Respect the Technique! - If your invitation is just for YOU, don't ask if you can bring other kinfolk, especially if the event is a formal one such as a wedding. Proper guest etiquette would be to adhere to the wording of the invitation. It is completely uncool to show up to a formal event with a guest in tow who was not originally invited.

Step Away from The Open Bar! - I've covered this important etiquette rule before, but let me cover it again. Be on your best behavior and monitor your alcohol intake. Of course there will be alcohol around, I'm not saying don't drink. Just make sure that people remember the event itself and not the fact that you were the resident lush for the evening.

Care Enough To Send Your Very Best! - I shouldn't have to say this, but I will. Although you are never obligated to get a gift for someone, you should (when necessary). Another way to display being a 'perfect guest' is by sending a note or card of thanks to the host. Personalize it by mailing it (hint: use a stamp and an envelope) and stay away from Facebook or other forms of social media. This simple gesture is a great nice-ty...and it goes a long way!

Will You Be My...Husband?

I created quite a stir on Facebook earlier this week when I posed this question to the masses, 'Ladies, would you propose to your guy?' Opinionated women chimed in almost immediately with comments such as, 'HELLO NO!' and 'NEVER!' One lonely guy dared to join in the discussion only to be met with extreme hateration by the women who spearheaded this virtual male-bashing session. It was abundantly clear that women are still comfortable with the cultural narrative of men proposing. After doing a bit of research on this topic, I learned that the societal belief is that a woman should sit around and wait for a man to decide when he wants to get married. Hmmm. Let's take a closer look at this, shall we:

I admit that I once was a real solid traditionalist. There are still some things I won't compromise. For instance, a guy should always call first (the three-day rule is still acceptable) or he should be the first one to ask a girl out on a date. However, lately I've been feeling different. Perhaps it's the types of guys I'm encountering. Or maybe I'm just getting older and I have less time for the waiting game. To me, it should be as simple as if you are in love and you know you want to spend the rest of your life building something with this person, then why not ask him! Sometimes we get so caught up in playing 'our role' that we over-complicate life. According to a recent study, one in three (31 percent) of Americans know of a female who proposed to her man. Also, eight out of ten men (80 percent) would be cool with a female proposing to them! Trust me, it's happening. So the question is, what side of the fence are you on? Should a woman propose to her guy?

November and December are such exciting months because although the season to walk down the aisle has slowed down, we've reached the time of year when men will be cleaning out their saving accounts to purchase that very important piece of bling bling. Yes, it's engagement season! With the sounds of jingle bells...wedding bells will be ringing in the ears of happy couples all over the world. According to a 2004 Conde Nast Bridal Group study, 19 percent of couples become engaged in December.

So, Why Are Holiday Engagements So Trendy?

The holiday season is a special time to spend with loved ones so it makes sense to decide to propose to your boo around this time of year. Another great reason why a holiday proposal makes sense is because the scene is already set: family dinners, intimate gatherings with friends, parties galore...many opportunities to pop the question will take place over the next few weeks...will you be saying 'Yes!' this holiday season?

Hey there bridal besties! I know many of you had your eyes on what was going on this weekend in New York as the festivities for Bridal Market kicked off. Bridal Market in NYC is a major deal and a great opportunity for wedding experts and brides-to-be to get a peek at all the upcoming Fall 2011 collections from some of your favorite fashion designers. Buyers, bloggers, mag editors and fashionistas flocked to NY this weekend to see looks from Amsale, Priscilla of Boston, Monique Lhuillier, Rivini, Ines Di Santo, and tons of other bridal fashion powerhouses. Unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to head out there this weekend so I chose to live vicariously through all of my Twitter pals who twitpic'd some fabulous gowns. As a special treat, I have compiled some of my favorite looks into a series of posts that will be up all week. Today, I am showing off all that was Amsale. By far, Amsale is my favorite wedding gown designer. Her Fall 2011 looks are ultra modern and so feminine. She gets it right...every single time. And as much as I loooooove talking weddings and planning them, Amsale makes me want to become a bride in a heartbeat! See why below.

The Boston Diamond Dash

Local couples will compete in a game of skill to uncover clues in a scavenger hunt that will lead them to the ring of a lifetime. The Bridal BFF Takes on La La's Full Court Wedding

Are you over celebrity weddings yet? No. Good, me either. Now I can comfortably share my latest obsession with everyone. I am completely obsessed with VH1's La La's Full Court Wedding. First off, La La is a total betty. It's true that when a woman is in love she literally glows. La La is doing some serious glowing as we watch her plan her uber-lavish wedding to pro baller and Denver Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony. And I completely understand that everyone's wedding budget is nowhere near that of Carmelo and La La's, but I think you'll enjoy watching them go through the same issues that many couples face as they embark on planning a wedding.

A Musical Interlude: Raheem DeVaughn

Last night I fell asleep listening to Raheem DeVaughn and the melodic sounds of his incredible album, The Love and War Masterpiece. This song came on and I had a major 'AHA' moment. I knew I had to share it with my bridal besties. The whole album is a complete win, but this song is amazing. Consider it for your wedding day playlist.

You're Engaged! Who Should Know First?

Q: He finally proposed! Woohoo. Now, who should I tell first?

A: It's a pretty obvious answer that your parents and his should be on the top of that list of people you are announcing your engagement to! The worst is to have them find out from another member of the family...or worse, via FACEBOOK! Ha ha. If they live far away, pick up the phone immediately. Remember, your parentals are extremely important to the wedding planning process (especially if they are fronting the finances!).

Once you've told your parents, it is okay to announce your engagement to the rest of your family and friends. I even recommend using xtra xtra, a local website designed specifically to celebrate life's milestones!

Bridal besties I've missed you so! I took a small break from blogging to take care of home. You know, that place where your heart is. It's essential to keep the people who are most important to you at the forefront. I've also had a chance to sit back and reflect on what a truly amazing summer it has been. I've made some new friends, experienced some new things, and allowed myself to be open to the possibilities. This new energy is highly contagious...so stay locked into my blog over the next few months for some awesome autumn wedding inspiration!

Keep An Eye on That Wedding Budget!

So, you recently got engaged! Congrats. I'm sure you are incredibly overwhelmed with the amount of detail that goes into planning for your big day. It's very easy to get carried away with making everything absolutely PERFECT...but perfection on your wedding day comes at a cost. And I'm sure there are plenty of budget-minded bridal besties out there that will be keeping a close eye on that wedding budget. Here are a few tips that will help you plan for your big day without breaking the bank.

1. SHOP FOR BARGAINS - Especially for all of my local bridal besties, I often post events such as bridal gown sample sales and trunk shows that are going on in the area. Check them out. You may find your dream gown at a deeply discounted price.

2. CUT BACK ON THE BRIDAL PARTY - I understand how important it is to have all of your closest family and friends by your side on your wedding day, but you may want to consider downsizing your bridal party, or eliminating it all together. The only two people that need to be at the altar on this day are you and your mate.

3. HAVE AN OFF-SEASON WEDDING - Consider having your wedding in the off-season which is typically in December - February. Surprisingly, many vendors are quiet and you may be able to negotiate good deals on their services.

4. A TWO-FOR-ONE DEAL - Have your ceremony and reception in one venue. Such a great way to save money.

5. NO NEED FOR FAVORS - Come up with a creative way to do a favor without it being an added expense. A great idea would be to combine your favor into an element of the reception such as the place cards or incorporate a candy bar in your menu.

6. A DRY EVENT - This may not go over well with your guests, but consider not serving alcohol at your wedding!

7. NO ADDITIONAL GUESTS PLEASE - If you can, cut back on inviting EVERYBODY (and that includes your fourth grade homeroom teacher and the nice guy who held the door for you last week) to your wedding. Having a good handle on your guest list is the easiest way to tame your budget!

8. DON'T BUDGE FROM YOUR BUDGET - Be realistic about what you can afford and prioritize your wants vs. needs for your wedding day. Be honest with yourself because as much as we would all love that platinum wedding, the majority of us must simply settle for a modest and sensible wedding!

The Great Bridal Expo Event

Bridal besties, if you're in the Boston area on Sunday, September 19th I recommend that you check out The Great Bridal Expo that is taking place at the Westin Waterfront (425 Summer Street) starting a 1 PM. Lots of fabulous wedding industry vendors will be on site during the expo so get all of those wedding planning questions ready. I will also be there to network and hopefully meet some of you!

You're Invited: Real Wedding of Cabral & ToRena

It is my pleasure to bring you another fabulous summer wedding. I am super excited about this real wedding feature because the groom is a friend and mentor. Local couple Cabral (of BostonOffline.com) and ToRena exchanged vows during an intimate ceremony held at the Dedham Community House this past June. The bride's gown was by David's Bridal and her bouquet of blue flowers was a perfect pairing. She looked stunning. Cabral's suit was personally tailored by his wife with assistance from Pamela Bush, formerly of Sew & Sow. The waitstaff was provided by The Ultimate Cocktail Party and food by local caterer Reggae on The Drum. The reception entertainment was provided by Boston's own C.C. Sounds. During the ceremony, Cabral and ToRena performed a traditional African ritual of 'jumping the broom' which symbolizes the couple 'sweeping away' their former single lives and jumping into a new life as husband and wife. The broom was designed by a local artist and friend of the couple, Karen Thompson, and she incorporated many details into the broom that were unique to Cabral and ToRena including images of the Dominican flag and a cameo of the bride's grandmother. There were so many special moments from Cabral and ToRena's big day. The ceremony itself was officiated by the bride's aunt. The couple also selected family members to recite scriptures during the ceremony. At the reception, each table was named after a place where the couple traveled. Guests even dined on homeade appetizers of 'Momma's Mac & Cheese' and 'Poppa's' Pizza Burgers' which were made by the brides' parents!
